What is coastal squeeze?

Published By GOV.UK [English], Thu, Feb 25, 2021 9:27 AM

The purpose of this project was to better define and understand what causes ‘coastal squeeze’ as well as to assess the best way of managing its past and future impacts.

Coastal squeeze affects natural habitat on the seaward side of structures, above the low tide mark. It is defined as: the deterioration of habitats arising from anthropogenic change, which prevents their landward transgression in response to sea level rise. This is relevant where there is a legal obligation to compensate for the impacts of maintaining coastal defences.
