UN Human Rights Council 49: UK statement for the interactive dialogue with the High Commissioner on South Sudan

Thank you, Mr President.

Let me begin by thanking you, High Commissioner for your report. As you have made clear, the human rights situation remains incredibly grave, and the violations and abuses being documented in South Sudan, including restrictions to civic space and widespread conflict-related sexual violence, are deeply concerning, as is the climate of impunity described in other relevant reporting.

We welcome the progress made by the Government of South Sudan towards the full implementation of the Revitalized Agreement. The UK is committed to supporting South Sudan to uphold its human rights obligations, particularly as we look to potential elections next year. We recognise the value of technical assistance and capacity building in helping to achieve this, and welcome the support provided by the OHCHR to date.

However, such efforts are only one part of a much-needed, more comprehensive approach to improving human rights, which includes a continued need for monitoring and scrutiny by the Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan. The Council should agree to extend its mandate this session.
