State of Competition report 2020: government response

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) was commissioned by the government to produce a state of competition report examining how well competition is working across the UK. On 30 November 2020 the CMA published its first report.

In this letter from the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy to Andrea Coscelli and Jonathan Scott, CMA, the government responds to the report.

The letter:

reaffirms the importance of ongoing reporting and invites the CMA to work with the government to confirm the regularity of future reports

recommends that the CMA continue engaging with the wider academic community to refine the approach to future reports

acknowledges that the findings of this and future reports will provide valuable evidence to help inform policy

reaffirms the government’s commitment to ensuring competition is working fairly and effectively across the country
