38th Universal Periodic Review of human rights: UK statement on Mozambique

Published By GOV.UK [English], Tue, May 4, 2021 2:15 AM

The United Kingdom acknowledges that Mozambique’s framework on human rights is relatively comprehensive and we welcome the government’s request for support to ensure security forces are well trained in International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law. The government must ensure all allegations of human rights violations and abuses are fully investigated, and perpetrators held to account.

The UK calls on Mozambique to fully implement recommendations accepted during its previous UPR.

We recommend that Mozambique:

Criminalise all forms of modern slavery and bring the legal definition of ‘trafficking’ in line with international standards.

Provide its National Human Rights Commission with sufficient resources to enable effective monitoring and enforcement of the implementation of the human rights framework.

Adopt an open, merit-based process when selecting national candidates for UN treaty Body elections.

Thank you.
