Lawyers and colleagues from Brighton are getting together to raise money for local free legal advice agencies in Brighton & Hove. The Legal Walk, returning for the 8th year, will take place on Wednesday 18 May.
The 10km walk will welcome fundraisers from all across the legal profession and anyone else who wants to support fair access to justice for all. Fundraisers are hoping to beat last year's total of over £5,000 which went towards crucial local free legal advice agencies such as Citizens Advice Brighton, Possability People, Money Advice Plus & Brighton Housing Trust.
How to join the walk
The walk will begin at the Magistrates Court, on Edward Street, and finish with a drink’s reception at the Citizens Advice Brighton office on Tisbury Road Hove. The walk commences at 5:30pm and fundraisers can join in groups or as individual's, everyone is welcome.
Last year, the walk welcomed law firms, barristers’ chambers, courts, law schools and those associated with the law industry to enjoy the natural beauty of Brighton whilst walking alongside the local community, all in the name of access to justice.
Bob Nightingale MBE, founder of LLST says: “After what has been an incredibly challenging two years, it’s more important than ever that we come together and raise funds for local advice agencies. The Brighton Legal Walk is a fantastic opportunity to bring the community together in the name of access of justice while also having fun. LLST remains committed to supporting these local advice agencies through events such as this.”
“The number of people badly affected by Covid 19, continues to increase. Many are facing serious problems and are in desperate need of legal advice. Domestic violence, unemployment, homelessness, and debt are all contributing to the hardship faced by many in our community. They need the support provided by legal advice agencies to resolve these issues”
Sara is a lone parent and has a child with a learning disability. Sara became unable to work due to ill health and fell into debt. She approached a local advice agency in Brighton because she was unable to pay her rent and her landlord had started an eviction court order against her. With the help of the agency, Sara applied for a Debt Relief Order. The application subsequently wrote off all of her debts, including rent arrears and the advisor at the free legal advice agency applied to the court to stop the eviction. This application was successful, and Sara is now paying rent and is debt free. This agency has won justifiable claims and wrote off over £160,000 worth of debt for 730 clients in 2020.
Fundraising efforts by the Brighton Legal walkers helps to pay for this work, assisting their local community and supporting fair access to justice.
