There is often a fear of offending someone by offering assistance so we develop skills and confidence

A new e-learning course to equip staff to effectively assist passengers with visual impairments has been launched by award-winning social businessman Dan Williams of Visualise Training and Consultancy.

It provides learners with the practical skills and confidence needed to assist passengers with sight loss and covers knowing the signs, eye conditions and their effects, emotional impacts, accessibility, assistive technologies, communication, mobility and sighted guiding techniques.

Having lived with sight loss from childhood, Dan fully appreciates the challenges it brings. However, thanks to his lived and professional experiences, he understands what support is needed when using public transport and has designed the course accordingly.

He says, “There are so many emotional and practical aspects to living with sight loss, so I wanted to design a course that will raise awareness and provide the knowledge and skills needed by everyone who regularly engages with people who have a sight impairment. There is often a fear of offending someone by offering assistance and not knowing how to guide, but the skills gained by learners gives them the confidence to overcome this.”

The course provides an ideal induction tool for staff assisting blind and partially sighted passengers and can be used as CPD evidence when applicable.
