In 2021 Mallinson’s Woodland Retreat welcomes the arrival of Dazzle Treehouse (and Pinwheel Treehouse to follow in August ’21)

For over 10 years Guy Mallinson has been welcoming guests to his magical world in the Dorset woods. Previously known as Crafty Camping the site began with traditional wood craft courses alongside camping - Guy was a ‘wood mentor’ on The BBC Mastercraft series which was filmed in the woodland. With the courses having moved away, all the traditional craft skills have been used to create the unique, sustainable luxury spaces that make up what is now known as Mallinson’s Woodland Retreat. Choose from award-winning treehouses, hand-crafted yurts, tipis and shepherd’s huts, each one a self-contained nest for two with its own facilities (and no kids!)

In 2021 Mallinson’s Woodland Retreat welcomes the arrival of Dazzle Treehouse (and Pinwheel Treehouse to follow in August ’21). Dazzle opens on May 21st 2021 and follows RIBA award winning The Woodsman’s Treehouse which featured on George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces and Grand Designs House of the Year in 2016.

Dazzle Treehouse - with its distinctive camouflage design, inspired by the patterns used to conceal WW1 ships and confuse the enemy, Dazzle was built between two mature oaks using local materials and with no impact to the surrounding woodland. Designed to provide a rich spatial experience and a distinctive external appearance, Dazzle asks the viewer to question the shape and nature of the building against the woodland backdrop. It's the perfect place to hide away from it all.

The ship theme continues throughout, with a gangplank walkway, rooftop funnels, yacht deck floors and a central glass spine, leading your eye out towards a prow-shaped deck and a slender alder tree. The fully equipped kitchen opens onto the rear deck, with its hot tub and cargo net daybed, suspended above the stream and beneath an oak canopy. With your own barbecue and pizza oven, you really can embrace all things al fresco. Inside, a wood-burning stove sits between the sitting room and bedroom, while an en-suite shower room (with proper flushing loo) completes the luxury treetop hideout.

The design was a collaboration between Guy Mallinson and Keith Brownlie of BEaM and built entirely by Guy and his team of highly skilled wood crafts people.
