Shanghai, China, December 14, 2021 – Lenovo Chairman and CEO, Yuanqing Yang, today announced that the company has donated RMB 200 million (~US$31 million) to Shanghai Jiao Tong University to support its three-year mission to drive leading scientific research, nurture new talent, and incubate new technologies.

The Lenovo donation follows a personal donation of RMB 100 million (~ US$15 million) from Yuanqing Yang announced in April 2021 to his Alma Mater to build a cutting-edge High-Performance Computing (HPC) Center to celebrate its 125th anniversary. The new facility will improve the university’s computing capabilities, facilitate research and innovation, support and help tackle common challenges faced by humanity.

The “Yang Yuanqing Scientific Computing Center” was officially opened on December 14th 2021 at the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The project took 120 days to be completed. The HPC system called “Si Yuan One” has a theoretical calculation peak of six petaflops, making it the No.1 supercomputer among similar facilities across all Chinese universities.

It uses the latest technology architecture to support both scientific computing and artificial intelligence needs and is the first high-performance computer in China to use Lenovo’s 5th generation liquid-cooling technology. Lenovo’s Neptune™ liquid-cooling technology can reduce energy costs by over 40 per cent compared with traditional air-cooling systems, enhancing computing power while contributing to China’s carbon neutrality goals.
