On Tuesday 24 May, Islamic Relief UK hosted an Eid reception at the houses of Parliament with the Minister for South Asia, North Africa, the United Nations and the Commonwealth, Lord Ahmad; the Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Catherine West MP; and Lord Sarfraz.

Eid marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan when Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. It is also when Muslims give generously to charity and this year Islamic Relief UK raised over £16 million to carry out life-saving work globally.

Hosted by writer Shelina Janmohamed, the event saw the Director of Islamic Relief UK, Tufail Hussain and the CEO of Islamic Relief, Waseem Ahmed convey messages of thanks to the UK government for support on some of the most pressing humanitarian issues around the world and in the UK. They also spoke about how continuing support is needed for the deteriorating situations in countries such as Afghanistan, Syria and Yemen as well as the increasing cost of living crisis in the UK.

“We truly value our work with the Government and across Parliament to advocate on behalf of vulnerable communities here in the UK and across the world, whom we’re privileged to serve. “Through our programmes we’re working to tackle some of the most complicated challenges from global hunger to the cost-of-living crisis here in the UK, now more than ever we know how important it is to provide lifesaving humanitarian assistance.”

“The life-saving and life-changing work of Islamic Relief shows what can be achieved at a global level when faith is harnessed, and a community of believers mobilised. What a shining example of faith as a force for good in the world. “You, and other faith organisations, are invaluable partners for the UK Government as we work to end poverty, disease, hunger and illness – and promote education and equality for all. “Together, we will continue to address global challenges, deliver investment, grow economies, support women and girls, and get humanitarian assistance to those who need it most. “Thank you for all you do to save lives, restore hope, and make the world a better place.”
