Islamic Relief UK supported Coventry Muslim Resource to help over 40 families with food and essential items on Wednesday 13 July, as families in Coventry continue to struggle financially due to the rising cost of living.
This is part of a wider initiative led by Islamic Relief UK involving 19 partners across the country to deliver food packs, Qurbani (1) meat and Eid gifts to coincide with the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha (2).
Coventry Muslim Resource Centre are reporting that they are seeing an increase in low-income families and refugees who are using food banks to survive at this difficult time.
Many people have been hit hard by the cost of living crisis, especially low-income families, those suffering from domestic abuse, people who are homeless, asylum seekers and refugees. They continue to make difficult decisions between feeding themselves and their families or heating their homes.
The food packs contained 1.6kg of Qurbani meat and essential items of rice, oil, salt, onions, chillies, tomato tins, garlic paste, chickpeas tins and mixed herbs.
Coventry Muslim Resource said: “The team here at the Coventry Muslim Resource Centre are dedicated in helping all in our community. Teaming up with Islamic Relief UK this year has giving us the opportunity to provide Qurbani food packages to the most vulnerable in our community.
“We have identified 40 families with the help of the Coventry City Council Migration team, who are in most need of these food packages. We hope this will bring some relief to people affected by the cost of living crisis during the celebration of Eid al-Adha.”
Tufail Hussain, Director of Islamic Relief UK said: “Coventry Muslim Resource Centre are doing incredible work to help their local community. As the cost-of-living crisis worsens our partners across the country are saying that calls for help have doubled in just the last two months.
“The increase in families using food banks at Coventry Muslim Resource Centre is heart-breaking.
“We hope that Islamic Relief UK and Coventry Muslim Resource Centre can bring much-needed help and support through food packs during the festival of Eid-al-Adha.”
