UK: Sarah Everard protesters should never have been at risk of prosecution

Responding to news that the prosecution of the six protestors who attended the Sarah Everard vigil last year has been dropped, Chiara Capraro, Women's Human Rights Programme Manager at Amnesty International UK, said:
"Amnesty is deeply relieved that the prosecution of the six protestors who attended the Sarah Everard vigil last year has been dropped.
"However, these people should never have been put through such an ordeal in the first place - from the heavy-handed actions of the police to the threat of a criminal record they have endured for many months.
"Peacefully expressing yourself is a fundamental human right and the apparent excessive use of force and disproportionate charges meted out by the Met is a stark and timely warning about why police in the UK should not be handed ever-broadening powers to quash peaceful protest."
